Fauna Surveys are a critical component for any environmental impact assessment. The appropriate type and scale of a fauna survey will depend on the size and landscape of any given project area. The Department of Parks and Wildlife have categorised two general levels of fauna survey, each of which can be provided by BIOTHORN PTY LTD to the highest standard. Our wildlife experts utilise the most effective minimal impact fauna surveying techniques and provide comprehensive documentation for all project activities. For extensive information regarding environmental impact assessment, please read the Technical Guide - Terrestrial Vertebrate Fauna Surveys for Environmental Impact Assessment, available from the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Level 1 fauna survey

Level 1 fauna surveys are comprised of a background desktop study combined with a verifying reconnaissance survey. These are primarily used to gather accurate background information on a project area and characterise the faunal assemblages present therein.  This information will help determine the necessity of a Level 2 survey, and determine whether a future widespread survey or a targeted species survey would be appropriate for a project area.

Level 2 Fauna survey

Following data provided by a Level 1 survey, a Level 2 fauna survey provides more comprehensive information regarding present fauna populations. These surveys involve more extensive fauna trapping and observation either widespread throughout a project area, or targeted towards particular species of interest.  Level 2 fauna surveys may be ongoing, and by conducting multiple surveys in different seasons of the year, BIOTHORN PTY LTD can provide the most accurate data on local fauna populations and measure the environmental impact of any given project.
